I was repairing a windshield and as I started putting resin into the star break which was about the size of a nickel the resin started to go all over the inside of the break about the size of my hold had.

The customer was upset and wanted me to pay for a replacement. I told him the windshield was already damaged with 3 breaks and would have to be replaced if not repaired sooner or later.

Should I pay for the replacement or pay half? I did not have him sign a waver or anything but you bet I will for now on.

windshield crack

Well that is a tough one, basically try and whatever your customer will agree to. I have only had pay for 1 windshield to be replaced because of it cracking out while I worked on it. It was because I didn't make sure the customer signed a waiver. It only takes one to learn a valuable lesson.

Good luck.

just try and remind him\her that it was the rock that damaged his glass and not you..

read the previous threads on disclaimers.

Replace or what?

Reed,

We all have to speculate about the varibles that were present that day beyond what you posted. Technically you are right the glass was already broken prior to your attempted repair. Did you educate your customer so he understood that? The best advice I can give you is to weigh all the factors on both sides of the coin and try to make the customer happy the best way you can. I have not had this happen to me and hope it never does. If it does this is how it would try to handle it. Good luck and post your resolution with the customer.

PS. Something to consider is how much you would be affected by this customers bad word of mouth. Maybe the damage from this would cost more than the windshield....

Pay it foward,

Brian

Happy new year everyone!

I'm Ricky Reed and I just registered today but I have posted the message concerning the crack windshield.

Thank everyone for the help and as soon as I hear from the customer again I will let everyone know what happens. I now have a disclaimer for everyone to sign.

I added the disclaimer to my invoice. Should I have this disclaimer separate from the invoice? Or is it ok with the invoice?

I have not heard from the customer in over 2 weeks now. And I will now make sure everyone sign a waver.

Having a waiver may not be a bad idea, but I am concerned about the cause and how to make sure it never happens again. FYI never work on hot or extremely cold windshields, they're more likely to crack out. Do not lean or otherwise put pressure on the windshield when repairing it. There are some other common sense rules too, but thje short of it is in thirteen years of doing long crack repairs I've never had one break out. I attribute that to following these guidelines. If you're having trouble contact me, maybe I can help you. Bill
