Boyd,
I have to agree with you on this one. To many lurkers and not enough postings.
I personally feel at times I may be asking some dumb questions on this forum. However, I also realize if I didn't ask for advice, I'd possibly continue to do things the wrong way and make windshield repair look bad for the rest of us! Can any of us really afford that to happen?
As a group we need to continually help each other improve our skills, provide higher quality repairs and start convincing the general public that repair should always be a first choice.
Please guys an gals starting out, dont' be shy!!!

I second the notion.
On the other hand, I think that those who do nothing more than read the posts with the intent of improving their repair techniques also benefit the industry as a whole.
Given the choice between a proficient tech or a proficient typist, I'll take the former anyday although a combination of both is ideal for the forum.
What irks me more than lurkers are those who post a question; are inundated with possible solutions and suggestions; and then creep off into the night like a burglar with your finest silverware never to be heard from again.

I like Desertstars don't like giving away years of self teaching to someone and not get a thank-you back. It took me years of trial and F-up's to get were I am today.
I don't mind helping, but I am not going to spoon feed people the get started. I been doing this before I even had internet. and I have not learned to much from the forums, maybe a little but that is about all. I guess I learned from hard knocks working for someone for a short time.
I had the networks and glass comp down, most all the repairs down to a point. Tryed most of the adv. ways, have learned differant ones and tryed them, droped the ones that don't work in this area..
But in general I will not spoon feed someone to jump right in and make there so called big bucks after I had to learn by the loss of my trail and losses.
I will help if someone has a problem doing something and can not figure it out. Just like in the cracks we were all talking about... THEY were trying..
If you try, I will help.
It is the same with the kids in our house. They expect us to do their home work for them because we did it already. I will help them find the answers but I will not point them out.. I will even get them on the right page and then have them read it out load so I know they are even reading.. OH MY GOD! They found the answer at this point.
Sorry if I sound to rough on anyone or like a hard ass, but I do not mean to, That is just the way I was brought up.. Just give a little effort if you want to work in this field and and we will help if you just cannot get it.
Well, I know I am going to get a lot of flack on this post.... I am sitting down for this one.

I'm not going to beat on you for that post. I know where you're coming from. Sounds like me... I spend years teaching myself and finding all the tricks that I see now on places like this.
I don't come here to learn how to do good repairs... I got that. But I don't know it all... nobody does. There is room for improvement in wsr, and many areas where there is general disagreement in the industry. There are new and different ways to do things... you never know when something better might pop up.
So, you can't have too much discussion when the goal is improving our business, in the techniques and in marketing. This is one area I have benefited... new ways to look at marketing and insurance, etc.
More people should join in... don't be afraid or thing you don't have something to add or ask about. You can find a lot by using the "search" feature on this forum, but that doesn't mean you can't make a new post on something.
When summer comes, I may not find time to check the forum so much, but right now old man winter has me in the house a lot, so here I sit.

Amen, gt_repair.
You'll get no flack from me.
It's refreshing to read opinions from pre Dr. Spock apologists or present day Generation Xer's when it comes to earning a living.
Many of them expect so much for so little in return.
As though they deserve it and it is their due.
You learned at least one thing from this forum or at from least some of us.
You aren't alone in your belief that that are too many who think they can take without giving or are entitled to something without earning it.
For those who present questions to this forum asking for advice in the future, at least consider how much you payed for the advice and whether the help of others is at least worth a pat on the back even through a private email.
So, hang in there, gt.
Read; contribute when you feel necessary.
Thanks for your input.

Hey guys,
I have a little bit of a different take on this. I personaly don't mind giving out information on marketing or other techniques because I hope that some day it might possibly be returned to me by learning other techniques that other people are using. Granted it took me years to figure some things out and litteraly thousands of hours and talking to thousands of customers to get a feel for the best way for me to do it. If I where to take the notion then that I don't want to share with others that would first off go against what I believe but second how would others benefit that really want to learn different ways to do things.
I am a big believe in the fact that if you help someone when its time that I need help it will happen for me. And I know others on the forum believe that too, not all but some. Granted there are tons of people that look at this forum and never talk (which is there right). I do hope that at some point some of them will get on and start talking. We are in a sense guys building a community here that will in effect impact our business and the way things are done. The more we help each other the stronger that community will become and benifit us in the long run. For those on the forum, please, please keep it up and keep giving great idea's and great comments on the forum. For those that are just lerking..... get involved, Start talking, we just can't talk to ourselves all the time.

Hey Desert, that was analogy about the burglar was funny....
But you also hit the nail on the head. My thinking on this subject follows 2 paths. You have the lurkers out there that are paranoid, and I have to admit, I get that way sometimes. But the number one reason is....:::DRUM ROLL:::... I think everybody that is signed up on this forum, with the exception of a few of us, is putting together a WSR marketing package to sell on the internet.
Just my 2 cents.
