I copied this from a write up about windshield repair/replacement, one of the worst article I have ever read on the subject.
However, when is the line between repair and replace crossed? VOSA sets out guidelines within the MOT, which state that it depends on the size and location ie if a chip is within the drivers’ main view (10mm permitted) or if it is in a corner of the windscreen (40mm permitted). ‘A vehicle can pass an MOT if it has a chip,’ said Esprit’s general manager, Neil Skidmore. ‘The test often used is whether or not the technician can cover the damage with a pound coin.’
Like the body repair market, windscreen technology is also affecting the windscreen repair process. First and foremost, the correct information needs to be given to the bodyshop to ensure that the correct windscreen is used when it is repaired, as sensors/radars etc found in the windscreen may not work and consequently compromise the safety of the vehicle. A range of resins are also needed for the different windscreen types. ‘A solar reflective coated windscreen needs a blue resin rather than a clear adhesive,’ said Maria Charlton, director, IWA (Independent Windscreen Academy). ‘Resins that are designed to be injected into a damaged area can cure under an ultra-violet light, and take around 25 minutes to complete.’ Laminated windscreens also require a special resin as they must have certain light transmission characteristics and bond the glass. ‘Different levels of viscosity exist in the resins,’ said Mark Holmes, director, Panther-Pro. ‘These range from low – enabling the product to penetrate small cracks, to high – used for simpler ‘bulls eye’ impacts.’
