Placemat Advertising
insurance legal letter
Calling all WSR's,
I am actually going to do my first formal advertising in the form of placemats. What I have learned so far is that you get approx. 2"x" space in 2 colors (they determine that). You get to pick the location but is only one unless of course you pay for more. The diner I am looking at uses about 50,000 placemats in a 3month time period and that would run $335.00. I would make my ad a coupon type for tracking purposes.
1. Does any one have experience with this type of advertising and what are pro's and con's with it?
2. What are some specifics about your ad layouts that made it work or what would you have done differently?
3. If you have another alternative to this type of advertising that might be more beneficial please share with all details.
Thanks and pay it forward,
Brian

Placemat Advertising
Placemat ads benefit the restaurant owners in that their personalized placemats are paid for by the advertisiments, so this is an expense that they dont have to bear themselves. The salesman wants you to believe that everyone will read the placemat and/or clip and save your coupon. I have serious doubts about thaat being realistic. There is a local restaurant that has advertising printed on their menus. This is a rural area, and you might think I could tell you which of my neighbors purchased an ad... I can tell you only one... not because I was interested in his service, but because he also purchased an ad in the directory I produced last June. I hope you give this a lot of consideration before going for it. How many repairs do you have to get from this ad in order to break even? Taking it by the average... $335 divided by $50= between 6 and 7, during the time these placemats are in use. Considering that when 2 or more people sit down to eat they are going to be interacting with one another and probably not reading what the placemat says at all ... (unless it is an area map ...popular in touristy place, a game board, or a chinese placemat with all the pagan year-of-the-somethings on it.... my guess is that they arent going to notice much of what it says).
If this seems negative, I apologize, you did ask for opinions, and this is mine. I think there are lots better ways to spend your advertising $$.

I agree with Grace. You figure that out of 50,000 mats that you'll be able to do 6 or 7 repair jobs and break even
on the deal. Honestly we use to get happy when an ad would break even. Now if we don't get a 5 to 1 return on a marketing technique we flat won't do it again.
This is a money making business but don't let some ad rep from some sounds to good to be true company take your money.
I owned a detail shop a few years back and I did a 40,000 mail drop because I figured that we only needed to do 30 hand wax jobs to break even. We would then upgrade. Out of 40,000 mail pieces we got 0 phone calls. It doesn't take a mathmatical genious to figure how much we made on 0 wax jobs.
I listned to the ad rep give her speil saying we needed to do it again because of the power of repitition. I fell for it again (man I was stupid then). Another 40,000 piece mailing netted us 3 frickin phone calls. One of those actually netted an upgraded wax job at 60 bucks. We we're out of business shortly after that.
Your best bet is to get Ron Ipachs marketing program and start learning as much as you can about marketing. Wether you like it or not, you are in the marketing business, and repairing windshields for money is the end result. Seriously, use that money and get Rons system.
Then follow it.
Not trying to be negative here, just trying to save you alot of frustration and aggravation.

placemat advertising
Hello all,
I want to assure everyone that I was not offended by the constructive criticism. I appreciate your wisdom and so does my wallet. I live on the east coast and have leather skin. So I can take a good shot.
Goldstar, I see you say there are better ways to advertise but did not post any alternatives to placemat ads. Constructive criticism without input leaves the job only half done. With that in mind, If you have any please post with specific details (who, what , why, when, where, and last but not least how) so we can learn from your efforts after all thats why were here.
I know this would help me and I see Jewel was thinking the same thing.
Thanks and pay it forward,
Brian @ SAFEGLASSTECHNOLOGIES.com

Re: Placemat Ads
the people who read the placemats are people with children and thoughs who run out of conversation, and when someone eles advertises on these thing as a business owner I think WOW, I wonder how they swung that deal. not that they will ever get one penny but that they found a new way to get in your face with their shop name. sometimes these thing will pull in the bucks, allways the right time right person who sees it, remember all it takes is one. if your in a rual area maybe this is a good thing if you picked up one fleet account is it worth it you bet if you made nothing then your back to square one, 50,000 people will see it you would think that even at 5% return would be 25 people. with wsr in a rual area are there that many chiped windows that need fixing, only you can determin this good luck, I allways wanted to have my add on the napkins that way its easier to put in there pockets & the plate won"t cover it up and if there's a bar they can use them in there also!
