1989 Pontiac Firbird back glass

Post by Cubs Fan »

I have a request to replace the back glass on a "converted" to the lift gate on the back to what he called a GTA Model conversion. The glass is just a about "12 high by "32 long that would be needed for this modification. He said that the rear trunk deck came from an earlier model Firebird, but All the pitures I have don't show this type of setup. Does anyone have any idea as to where I  look up the glass needed for the modification?

If you have the GM original Tailgate it takes DB 7434 4 holes 16.8 X 53.3. There was an aftermarket company called Contempo Campers that offered a similar set up for Camaros and Firebirds. The NAGS part for this was dealer only and very rare. Contempo is long gone. I haven't seen one of these up close so I am not familiar with them. It's possible it could be fabricated out of flat stock, drilled and tempered. You wouldn't have the defroster but it's better than no glass. Send some pictures we may be able to do this for you. Or you could change over to regular Glass tailgate. Lots of these in wrecking yards.

That's the one! A notchback. The owner currently has a piece of 1/8th inch plexi that used to be installed. I can rope in the plexi, but due to it's flexability, will pop out once he opens a window. I suggested to him to go to a plexi shop and have a 1/4 inch piece cut in that it should provide a stronger alternative. Thank you for your time on researching this headache!

Can you tell if that glass is/was set from the inside or outside?

Can't tell how it was set but if it was me doing the setting, I'd pull the rope from inside. I sent him to a glass shop to cut a piece of tempered. Thanks for the help.
