Chips in the frit area.

Post by Mr Bill »

Sometimes I encounter chips in the black, frit area of the WS.
Since they are in the frit, one cannot use a mirror and it is hard to see the damage clearly.
If you mount an injector onto this black area, you are working blind.
I have also seen small surface chips, where the rear view mirror is attached to the WS, (there is usually a black area on the WS and the mirror is glued onto this black area.)
How do you guys handle these?

Just get one of those headlamps, that way you can keep your hands free and put light on the break at same time.

Same as any other repair, just no mirror. Only option is checking and double checking progress from the outside and perhaps giving cycles extra time. You are still able to see the damage from outside even though not as well so just take your time and handle as usual.

When drying out in this black are do not use too much heat, as we know what black does. Also it is useful for some to use an alignment tool through the injector, a lot of time can be wasted trying to fill a chip when the injector is not over the pit.

I agree with the use of a light, as long as it is not your UV one, which I have seen somebody try.
