Glassdoctor thanks for the heads up on this . I don't know about some of the dealerships here but I do know the company I work for does aleast a third of the dealerships and a bunch of the car rental places ( we have 5 stores in this area) and to be honest we do great replacment jobs but the repair side needs some work. Anyway I hope to stay away from the dealships but you never no thanks again.

Igotskills,

If your working 6 days a week for this company doing glass replacement your probably pulling in around $750-$850 a week in wages. If you get paid health insurance that's another $100 a week. Don't expect to make much more than $600 a week starting out. After you get your feet wet in this business for a while than you can go for alot more. Seeing that your married with no children and your wife works I'd go for it. Might have to make a few sacrifices along the way though.

Good luck with your decision

Thanks repair1. If you have time would you email me your post on dealer/fleet accounts, I do read alot of your post but I don't no if I caught this one. Starquest you hit the nail on the head as far as wages go, I no I will probley not make that much at first but I will be much happier and that is what is important to me, the money will come if I work hardand give it my best. My wife works for the university here so I can be added to here benifits which is a huge plus.

Quality Work & Refferals

I knew I would get nailed for some of my comments, and I totally understand. Of course, everything is fair game and there is no guarantees for anyone to keep accounts. But the situation in your market is very unusual. I won't go into it anymore though. It doesn't really matter.

Look, I had still competition in my market too. I stuck with it and it took several years to gradually build up my dealer accounts. It's a tough road to hoe, that's all. I know I would not go there personally. :) I have several competitors always after my accounts as well for the past couple years, and so far I haven't lost any accounts. Only a couple cars hre and there... usually a freebie. The real threat is the dealers themselves. There is a strong push by wsr suppliers to sell to all the dealers and their body shops to get into the wsr biz. I have lost work to the dealer going in-house.

I don't think its fair that you tell me how unusual my market is and don't give a reason to why. I work in the market every day and I don't see anything unusual. What do you mean? Is this somthing that somebody else told you that they heard from somebody else that saw somebody doing something unusual? Don't take offense to this im just wondering what you are talking about.

new? again?

Post by WIN-1 »

I work 6 days a week from 8 to 6 so I can't really even do it part time.
Dang it , IgotSkills, if you work your new business like you do for somebody else,... Yeah, you'll be fine. Insurance is a Biggie, plus your boss is paying half your taxbill, but shoot- there are many benefits to being self-employed.
My suggestion for your situation is set everything up in advance- go to another town on a 2 week vacation. Cold call, sell fleets, specialize in retail business- just give it a test flight, right? Check out the billing, the 100 items a day detail BS I hate so much-
See how you do and check the water. I've inadvertanently burnt some bridges I very much regret,...but if you give a 2 week notice and you aren't under a Non-Compete clause can't you always go back to the Salt Mines?
Good luck
Ken
