Help taking before/after pics!

Now I'm no pro with a camera so any help would be appreciated.

I have a dslr (fujifilm) and no matter what setting I use I can't seem to get a good quality before/after.

How close to hold the camera etc?

Take a look at your camera, there should be a button with a flower. That's the macro button or maybe it just says focus. For close-ups, the macro button is your friend. The macro setting is designed to allow the camera to focus on subjects. Also, I would suggest putting your camera on a tripod and use the timer setting (most cameras have a 10 or 5 second timer), because there will be some movement when you press the shutter button.

Ive tried macro on 2 different settings but still not the results I'm hoped. How close do you have the camera to the windshield?

You want to be close but at an angle so your shadow won't be in the picture. I emailed you my contact information so give me a call, I can explain things better over the phone.

If you can switch to manual focus and adjust it so the focus is about as close as you can get it, then move the camera in and out to get the chip in focus. If you don't have that then put something on the glass that the camera can "see" and focus on. Maybe a piece of tape cut like an arrow showing where the chip is. Some auto focus systems just can't seem to find clear glass and will focus on what is behind it which will through the chip out of focus. I think this is the problem that you are having. I like manual focus best in this case, and yes, use a tripod or brace your hands and arms etc on something solid so as to hold the camera as still as possible. Using the timer is also a good suggestion. A mirror behind the chip will give a good picture but it will be a double chip because of the reflection in the mirror.

I use my business card for a focus aid, it also makes someone else using the pic a little embarrassing for them(and an add for me).
