lower back pain

Post by bill lambeth »

Have any you guys suffered from lower back pain?My wife seems to think it is from bending over cars all day.My chiro says that my hamstrings are way to tight.I work out everyday but I admit that I dont stretch enough.Maybe a little off topic but I think OLD PEOPLE like screenman might have some input.

I had lower back pain last week after repairing 3 WS in a row. That was the first time while doing WSR's. However I do get lower back pain or strain when I do the headlight restorations. I purchased a small stool and that has worked fine for the past 2 years. Iam almost 59 and I walk two miles a day and do a few light weight exercises to stay in shape. Its the bending , reaching and twisting that bother my back and leaning over for periods of time. You are not alone. Have a good day. PS My Marine combat days are catching up with me.

I used to get back ache quite a lot when I was fat/overweight call it what you want, but now I am 25 kilo lighter the problem has gone away. I also stretch and cycle a lot, somewhere between 20 and 40 miles 4 times a week.

Growing old is compulsory, growing up is not. At 55 I like nothing better than belting around off road on the mountain bike.

I like it a post with a bit of humor :D , certainly put a smile on my face. Old is only one of many names I get called, good job I am thick skinned as well as just thick.

I cant imagine your back pain being related to this type of work unless there are other underlying issues. Yes, we bend over hoods and climb step ladders but it's not like you are bent over for long periods of time.

I agree. Sounds like fatigue caused by other preexisting problems.

I can probably help a little here as I am a qualified personal trainer/fitness instructor [now retired from that line of work, very difficult to make a decent living from it!!]
There are two main things that would benefit you, first, stretch, stretch and stretch again, see your doctor [do you say 'physician' your side of the pond??] as to which stretches would be best relevant to your problem, but tight hamstrings and glutes [butt] often cause lower back pain.
Also, regular abdominal work [ie sit ups etc] will help greatly but you ABSOLUTELY MUST balance it with lower back extensions. Be careful, you must do these correctly or you will get a 'pot' belly. Again, worth seeing your chiropractor for advice.
A one to one session with a qualified Pilates instructor should also get you on the right track as well!!

I am 62. My back doesnt bother me at all during WSR. My knees hurt, especially when doing a repair on a big freight truck windshield, since I have to climb up and find a place to stand on the side of the engine. We still have the best job in the world though.

Yep, this (old ?) man (76) has that problem and attribute it to too many jobs in one day or too close together.
But as several have said staying in good shape physically is the best medicine.
Personal responsibility on my part sad to say has not been good since I fully retired in '98. Used to work out 6 days and high intensity aerobics with a bunch of cute young chicks in tights.
Some how just got out of the habit and much heaveier in receint years and feel the differance.
