Scratch-n-sniff
If you're talking white t-shirts, these are very cheap wholesale. The shops can buy them for around $1.00 sometimes. That's why aggressive, or high volume shops can sell screenprinted shirts for 3 or 4 bucks. The "normal" wholesale price for t-shirts is about $2, give or take some depending on the quality. The best quality may cost a printer closer to $3. You wouldn't believe how many different white t-shirts are available. Color shirts always cost more than white too...
Custom embroidery is different. It costs a bit more and so does the clothing. Polos, sweatshirts, jackets.... but it's definitely more "high end" than a screen shirt.
Nice polos can cost from $10 to $20 or more wholesale. Really, it depends on the brand. But if you consider that you could get, say, a custom-emboidered IZOD brand polo for less than you would pay for a plain one at a department store, it's a bargain, even at $40. They are often $50 or $60 in the stores, especially if they are tagged with Nike, etc.
Go with a more generic polo and you could be looking at $20 or $25 each for a couple custom shirts. That's about what you would pay for a plain polo at K-Mart. How could you complain?
It's the same with sweatshirts... you can get a basic brand fthat costs the embroider shop $4-5 wholesale, or a really nice one that costs about twice that... the kind you see for $65 with a Nike swoosh.
If you go shopping for custom clothing, maybe this will help a little... others may have a different perspective on the matter, but this is how I have seen it form brief dealings with my brother, and snooping through his supplier's catalogs.
