HLR Origami Folding...

Post by pommy »

Hi all,

It seems that the favoured way to apply the Delta UV coating is with the Scott Shop Towels.

Below is how I do it - if you do it differently, I would love to know - so please make a post if you do

Also, if you look in the last picture, I hope it shows - but there is a smooth side and a rough side to the towels, which one do you use as the outside edge?

Cut in half:

Fold one of them in half again:

And again:

And once more:

I like to make a few to speed the job up (keep them sealed):

Here is the surface difference:

On the left is the INSIDE of the paper, and on the right, the OUTSIDE.

There is a big difference when folded to a small square.

The side you use doesn't matter.

WOW the new year is bringing new informational light to forum .
Outstanding pics, replies, and great ideas.

Maybe we could start new board topic just on tools.

I cut mine in half as the picture is shown. I tri fold length, then fold in half. I dont want the towel to be too thick. It will soak up more liquid the way you have it in squares. You could be losing enough solution to do 2 or 3 addtional vehicles per bottle. I dont want that towel to dry too fast or it will drag when I attempt to do the second headlight. I use one side on one HL and flip it over to do the second. I've started using a plastic bread box to keep my open towels in. I found by leaving them in the vehicle the towels get mositure in them. Dampness is ok for the 4.1 but not for the C2P.

Interesting...

I thought the way I was doing it was 'THE" way?

I'm not sure what you mean though, by "tri fold length" (Fold one cut half, three times?) "then fold in half"...? How does that make it thinner?

Cheers,

Pommy

Take the long half and fold both sides to the middle. Then fold the length in half. Its less clothe than the way you have it shown. I use only the very tip of the cloth. I seldom wore gloves with the C2P , because I wanted to feel the touch of the lens and used very light strokes. With the 4.1 I use gloves all the time. The reason the 4.1 dries so hard within a few minutes . Its like fingernail polish. I had to use polish remover to get it off the first time I used it without gloves. I experimented to see which fold gave me a good application without letting it soak up too much of the solution, yet still give me a smooth application without any drag. I talked to someone not long ago that uses a thin sponge. I also have the C2P & 4.1 measured to the point that I have almost no waste. A few times I under estimated the 4.1 becasuse I did the side markers that wraped around to the HLs and did the Fog lamps. I find it easier to measure the 4.1 with the Ml tube that comes with it. The C2P would build residue in the measureing side. I had a quarter bottle go bad a few months ago. I keep my kits in the house except when I get a call and it still set up. It was about 4 months old. It looked like syrup. I will try your way on my next job and see how I like it vs my way with the 4.1. and see how much solution it takes.

I fold mine in half and then cut a section about 2 1/2 to 3" long out. Then fold that in half and thats it.

I measued equal solutions and folded the towel your way and my way. I used 4.1 infiniti solution for 2 headlights 10 ml. I used a clear sheet of glass. I used yours on 1 side and mine on the other. I got 6 strokes (width of towel) x 12 inches more with mine than yours. Thats not much of a different. However if i am doing sidemarkers, foglamps or wrap around headlights I won't need additional solution in most cases. My towel at the end was still wetter. Your method is better for storage. I have to do my folds prior to each HLR because it wont stay folded. I just Cut mine in three sections and folded it. I can get 6 sections out of 1 towel or If I need more towel to grip maybe 4 instead. Thats better than 2 per towel Iam now getting. It folds down to about, estimate 1 3/4 inches. Even with 4 sections I would get twice as far with a role of towels if I only used a roll for swabbs. I normally go through 8-12 sheets per HLR, wiping and drying off. Sometimes less while others more. I try to catrch the sales at 2.50 for a double pack. I wipe down between sanding and after prespray and final washing.

Hey thanks for conducting the trials - I really appreciate it (you'll find t4K mocking this thread in another post?)

Anyway, using your method would definitely save on towels, but I only use 8ml on a set of average lights, not the 12/3 as suggested.

Did you know that the multiplier is .25?

So if you want to use 8ml of the white, you just multiply that 8 by .25 = 2ml of the clear.

I'm going to try your way on my really thin test light!

Have a great day buddy!

Cheers,

Pommy
