jsspivaaolcom,
Welcome to the forums!
While I didn't make the comment, I took it as "marginal profit," as compared with LYNX et al...If this isn't how you meant it Gary, please correct me!
Also, this business is just like most others. You have the ability to do very well doing windshield repair. You can make $100 per hour or more.
Do most people make $100 per hour?
Absolutely not!
Not because "you can't make money at windshield repair," but because it's not that easy. The hardest part of this business is marketing yourself and your business. If you put your heart and soul into making this business work, get your hands on as much marketing information as you can find, and are dedicated, then you have every chance at the $100 per hour or more.

Re: Marginal profit
It was mentioned in another post at one time about how some w/s repair equipment vendors throw around these numbers to create a "pie in the sky" picture to make people think they can get rich in this business. I really don't want to be percieved as negative, just realistic.
I am guilty of doing what irritates me when others do it and that is to assume that everyone is going to have the same perspective or experience or expectations that I do. I forgive myself.
That being said, I need to say that on tenet that I most firmly believe is, "the most precious and perishable commodity is 1 hour of productivity".
My personal choice is to NET 20.00 per hour is this business. My average revenue per invoice is 40.00. (insurance, cash jobs, and fleet billings) I don't think there are very many wsr techs out there that have a higher average. For every added hour that I spend chasing old money due rather than getting new business lowers my average invoice and my net. If I don't do the administrative and bookkeeping myself, then I have to hire and pay someone to do it, same effect.
Again, I choose to be a one man operation (and it appears most others do) and I simply want to make enough to live on, go fishing once in a while and put some into savings.
So, this really is all about choices, I'm sure that a well advertised and promoted wsr business can gross $100.00 per hour. But after all the expenses and overhead, what is the net? And more important, is the demands that it puts on you and your life a fair trade off for YOU.
After considerable research, my best guess is it would required an investment of approx. $100.000 to start from scratch and and be grossing $16.000 a month in a minimum of 1 year and more likely 2 years. (that's 100.00 per hour)
For approx. $150.000 to $200.000 you may be able to purchase an existing business that is performing at this level.
I started from scratch with no money at all, just getting out and knocking doors, and that is and always will be the hardest and most challenging part of this game. This is where discipline, intense "want to" comes in.
In the past couple of months, as I have evaluated my past years business, I have determined that the most important and most valuable thing that I do is KNOCKING DOORS!!! Because now I can see the results. It really is worth it, not to mention getting to meet people all day.
ANYTHING that takes me away from this activity is counter-productive and from this came my personal decision to AVOID doing insurance work. Because of all the additional work that it entails. When it is so simple to have the customer just pay me and send in the invoice for reimbursement. (and most of the time, they will have their check in less than 15 days!).
I hope this explains where I'm coming from and is enlightening to anyone who might get excited by those unrealistic claims made be some others.

$100.00 an hour???
To follow up, I plan to do as I said in the previous post, and that is to "experiment" with sending in one invoice a month to find out and document what happens. This will take time but it's what I can afford for R&D (or to gamble). I will be looking into setting up a link that will give anyone instruction on direct billing each particular insurance company as well as what to expect on time of payment. For those who like me, are unwilling to or can't afford to wait a long time to get paid.
By the time I have done this with enough invoices, then and maybe then I will be money enough ahead to direct bill all my invoices. At that time, I (we) will see how much I end up with in receivables and if it's not realistic for my situation then------

Re: Direct billing
Gary,
I am glad that you have recognized a problem and better yet have evaluated it and implemented a plan. So many people just blindly keep going through the motions and when nothing changes, ask why? or blame the system or someone rather than take responsibility for their situation. A wise old man I work with told me that "When you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you will do something about it". So kudos for you Gary.
As far as the "pie in the sky marketing" well, I can not say I blame them...They are marketing there kits/products and use this appeal to attract you and I. It is our responsibility to sort through it. Using the $100.00hr. possibility is just that, a possibility not an immediate reality. I have not come close to that but will keep trying to achieve and surpass that mark. It will take determination, persistence, character and a strong will to succeed. If this does not happen for me, I will not focus the marketing hype because I ultimately know I made the decision to pursue WSR based my research, not the "pie in the sky" marketing approach. I hope I will stumble on my "pie in the sky marketing technique someday but not at the expense of my integrity.
I guess the moral of the story and my outlook is "Stand And Be Counted" we all need to take responsibility for our decisions and stop looking for scape goats to the "why me?" Life is full of possibilities and they are all possible... So go get the ones you want.
Sorry if I got sidetracked...
Pay it foward,
