Hey Chip Dr, Do you make your stencils with a typewriter??? How many Cars per week do you average for Vin etching??? I like your Website, Very informative, Excellent... Thanks...

VIN etching
The sand blast gun with brass letters is what we use. We discovered that we could use label tape stencils (made on an old Ideal stencil cutter bought off of eBay) instead of changing the brass inserts to save time. The stencil cutter is too heavy to carry around, that's why we require an email list the day before we service a dealer.
We currently have 2 high-end dealers that we etch all new vehicles - between 50 - 200 per month depending on the economy. Car sales are very cyclical so this is not any guaranteed amount each month.
Thanks for the compliment on our website - 7 years old and constantly evolving! It generates much more business than our former Yellow Page ads ever did.

Has anyone found out how Toyota does there VIN etching. By acid brushed style does not even look the same. Thats who I get my calls from. Toyota dealerships that had to replace a piece of glass and need the VIN number put back on. My style is smaller and chaulky looking. I need to know what Toyota uses.

Can you tell me more on the label tape stencil? I am intrested in that idea. I have the GT vin etch system also.
I guess I can say I have the VP-5000 repair sysem, the Automark vin etch, and now the scratchhog II that I am working with.. the hog seems like it is going to do the trick... Now all I have to do is learn how to use it better. I am amazed what I could remove today....

The stencil machine is an old Ideal stencil cutter. It cuts 1/4 inch letters but unfortunately, the machine weighs about 50 pounds and is large (you can do a search online and see a modern day version). It looks like one of the old type label makers with a big wheel mounted on top of the machine.
We buy vinyl stencil material from a number of different glass etching sites on the web. The vinyl is adhesive backed so it sticks to the front of the brass letter stencil box while pressed against the window to etch the VIN. The stuff comes in rolls - usually 12 inch minimum width so it has to be cut down to use. We cut 2 stencils per vehicle.
The long and short of the story is that it's a pain in the rear but still better than manually inserting the brass letters for each vehicle. The only requirement is to have the dealers email the VIN's a couple of days before hand so we can precut them.
There has to be a better way but I haven't discovered it yet.

How big or small is the air comp. that you use? I have 2 differant air comp.'s one is aCampbellHausfeld #FA2003 1 gal. www.chpower.com/index.asp
