Should repair resin set solid after windshield chip repair ?

Post by CrystalClear » September 8th, 2017, 1:50 pm

I noticed 2 chips on the windshield day after I bought the car, not sure if they were there when I bought it or if the chavvy kids in the neighbourhood caused it by throwing stones or something so this really irratates me not knowing.
I bought a windshield repair kit, I repaired one successfully and it barely looked noticeable so was very happy with the repair.

I then tried to fix the bigger chip in the upper middle section of the windscreen. after I took the syringe tool off I noticed the resin had dried but I could still see a little bit of air. I scraped out the resin trying to dig deeper to get the air out but wasn't able to.

a windscreen specialist said as it had been repaired once that it can't be done twice ( I was told this is because once resin sets it bonds and becomes part of the glass, which would make sense as to why it can't be repaired twice, but why has the resin not seemed to set properly as I am able to scrape out the resin from the pit ?)
The specialist didn't perform the repair procedure but drilled into the pit and filled in the pit with resin and ''cured'' it with his UV light

A few weeks later I decided to try again at getting air out and so as I was scraping the resin it came right out and when I filled in the pit with resin I am able to pick it out with my nails or by scraping it very gently with the blade.

Question is, is it normal to be able to pick out the resin from the repaired pit of the chip or should it be set solid like glass ? if so how can I get it permanently filled in, do I need to use thicker resin ?

thanks very much

Windshield repair is a permanent process that displaces air from the break and fills it with a curable, optically matched resin.

Resin does not get as hard as glass but if you are using a quality pit fill resin it will get pretty hard...like a scratch resistant coated acrylic. You should not be able to pick it out but you can drill it out of the pit area and you can scratch it with a scribe or probe. Some resins are better than others and there are a number of other variables that may make even the best resin removable with a scribe, hydrophobic coatings for one.

Properly prepared and properly filled with a high quality resin the resin should be permanent, although over time the surface of the resin may begin to degrade depending on environmental exposure. Generally speaking we are talking about years down the road however, not days, weeks, or months.

For filling pits purchase the highest quality windshield repair resin on Amazon.

I would get a professional windshield repair system with high quality resins and follow their windshield repair steps.
