alternative to a lighter for heat

Post by DavidCook » May 28th, 2013, 6:18 am

On the rare occasion heat is needed to help resin flow what heat source do you prefer.
We avoid using a lighter due to the customers perception of a lighter. We use the moisture evaporator a lot.

We have been using a Iroda MJ-950 Ulta Therm Butane Heat Gun. It looks like a tool not a heat gun or torch.

Does anyone have another heat source that works good for them.

I only use a moisture evaporator to dry out a chip prior to repair, then cool it before the repair. I never use heat while repairing because it causes the crack or chip to close and prevent resin to flow in to the crack. The closing of the crack with heat gives the illusion of a complete repair until it cools.

The Blazer GB2001 is a great little butane torch - mine has worked fine for over 20 years. Metal vs. plastic parts, one-handed operation. Around $50 and well worth it.

I totally agree with t4k and screen! I do not use heat on inside! Drystar to dryout when needed and then cool off with the blue thing Delta makes!

I often do repairs in winter. In my area of Montana the winters are not as harsh as most of the state, but I still do repairs in below freezing weather. I use a Bic in these conditions. Screenman and T4K, what do you guys do in the cold of winter? If I could go without the lighter that would be ideal but it just seems to take too long to fill when it's cold out....

Localized heating will shut the legs of most breaks, try it on your practice glass and you will see the results very quickly. Overall heat is the answer on extremely cold days, where there is a very large area of warm glass around the damage.

I have demonstrated to many people how long the legs take to open back up after local heat, I also demonstrate that if localized heat is used and then cured that the heat sink will show the end of those legs you think are full back up in a few seconds.

Flexing and cooling is a far better tool for filling those legs.

So as a better practice, you recommend that the defrost be set to a medium temp while performing the repair? This makes sense as I notice what you are talking about in my wintertime repairs.
