Groit's wore out prematurely??
After 27 sets of headlights, the nylon drive in the Griot's tool has disintegrated. Shouldn't this last longer? Is there a better tool available? Am I doing something wrong? I know there are brush sets available for it, but the rest of the tool isn't lasting long enough to wear out the brushes. Any Ideas?

Sounds like you have an older model orbital which came with nylon gears. I am able to help you get the newer model orbital with metal gears at no cost. I emailed you my contact information so please email or call me when you find time.

Korey,
Can you provide a link some where on the website that has the brushes? I cant find it and would like to order a few backups.

You can find them on the DKI site Motor Brushes for the Griot's Random Orbit Sander.

I believe Groit's is a polisher and not made for heavy pressure sanding. We have stopped recommending both the Groit's and Metabo for this reason. We now recommend using a flex drive with a speed control. Requires more skill, but has many advantages.

Ray6 - don't know what type of refinishing you are doing (you always mention that you have different methods but never share) but this unit works well. I have a 6 of them and four are in daily use. No issues other than brushes.
I would like to see one with the quality and feel of a DeWalt or Makita, but none exist.

Thanks Ray6,
Like Korey said it was the older model with the nylon gears that failed prematurely. The brushes look like new. I have a new one now and it even sounds better than the first one. Maybe there was something misaligned in the old one. I'm away to the races now.
