I have been reading all the comments on another thread and to me it sounds like most of you are telling the customer to expect 80% of your effort and trying to say that should be a good job filling a break... I can not see someone having a % rating that low. We can not re-repair our work. As we know there are lots of chips that have been repaired that can be viewed just walking past a car... Most repairs should not be viewable that far away. If your repairs look like that... maybe you may want to find another line of work also...
I also remember reading some of you hand pick our jobs to were if you can not repair the break in 5 Min's you would not take the job... Some of you have found out that it can and will take way longer to repair a break than you expected. I guess 2 - 2.5 hrs is to long to do a good job on a chip.
How many of you newcomers would be in this line of work if the paychecks were still 25.00 for an insurance claim? Now that the networks are paying 50 plus for a claim, everyone is coming out of the woodworks for their quick buck. The gas prices are rising and now they are squealing that it will cost them to much money out of their pocket....
It is like when my dad was in a nursing home on his last leg of life fighting cancer, I asked the nurses why they are in this line of work, and most said it was because of the money, some said it was because they like this line of work and want to help.. My dad had one of the nurses that said it was for the money, and I saw no care in her work at all. I had her removed from my dad when he fell off the toilet being unsupervised with her knowing he could not hold him self on it along, and had another nurse that I watched and could see the care from her... she was there to the very end, even on her off time.... She said money was not a mater to life...
Money helps, but a passion for the job will make you work harder...
I also do free work for those that can not afford to pay me. I do dead runs for others just to ease their minds on a little peck in there new car....
Were is your heart in your work?
I do not expect any comments from anyone of you, as most do not like my views from what I write..
For the techs that have a heart in your job, this is not worded to you. I hope I spoke for you also.

It is noone's place to judge who does or does not have their heart in what they do.
I can't help it but to put this out there:
I SELL A STRUCTURAL WINDSHIELD REPAIR THAT IS GUARANTEED TO SEAL THE DAMAGE AND STOP IT FROM CRACKING OUT. THERE ARE NO COSMETIC GUARANTEES. I DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT PERCENTAGES, I TELL THEM IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A COSMETIC REPAIR.
I SHOW MY CUSTOMERS ENLARGED BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES SO THEY CAN CLEARLY SEE A SPOT OR AN OUTLINE, SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT FINISHED REPAIRS GENERALLY LOOK LIKE. AND I DID THIS BECAUSE OF SEEING SO MANY WSR WEBSITES WHERE THE AFTER PICTURE LOOKS LIKE THE GLASS WAS NEVER MOLESTED.
IF ANY TECHNICIANS MEASURED FAILURE RATE IS LESS THAN 2%, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT EQUIPMENT, RESIN, OR TECHNIQUE IS BEING USED.
THE ONLY BAD REPAIR IS A FAILED REPAIR. IVE SEEN MANY THAT I THOUGHT I COULD HAVE MAYBE MADE LOOK BETTER BUT THE REPAIR WAS NOT FAILING SO I NEVER CRITICIZE ANOTHER TECHS WORK.

I agree with you D2,I dont talk bad about other peoples work.To be honest you really dont know what it looked like when that tech got there.I have people try to get me to talk bad about some of my local competition but I am not going there. My job is to do the very best that I can and that is full time job when you consider all we have to do(bookkepping, marketing, sales calls, keeping our employees straight and motivated, etc). As far as percentages,I try to stay away from that but if I do it will be a low percentage(60-70).

I don't think anyone has said they give an 80% effort. What is being said is that the break will look 80% better after it's repaired! BIG difference. If there is a post that says someone is only giving 80%, I could not find it.

I could not walk away with a repair that only looks 80% better. To me, if one could not take the time to complete a job you have started, that said, there are lots of repairs done that are so visible, just walking past a car that have air pockets trapped in them. I would say that person is only getting 80% of there effort...
The comments are NOT pointed to any specific person here. The comments are open views from reading what has been posted and from what I see from other so called techs work as I am called in for retail or Ins. claims or inspecting lots..
Remember it does say " Open views from reading this forum". None of you can tell me that your eyes do not roll from some of the stuff posted all these years...
I do know I make everyone's eyes roll and heads shake from a lot of my posts. Oh well.
Someone told me I am not perfect, I am still trying to prove them wrong... OK, that was a joke for the ones that are to serious here.....

Re: Open views from reading this forum
I think that many of us like to under sell and over deliver when it comes to the how well the finished repair will look. I agree that the majority of our repairs should improve by considerably more than 80%, but if I tell my customer if my customer expects 80% cosmetic improvement I know they are going to be pleasantly surprised when I'm finished working on their car. If I promise 95% and for some reason the cosmetic improvement is only 90%, at least in their eyes, they may be disappointed. It's important to remember that your view of 95% may not be the same as your customer's view of 95%...or 99%...or 80%.
I love it when a customer is only expecting 80% cosmetic improvement and when I get done they have trouble finding the repair. More often than not our customers tell us the end result looks much better than they were expecting.
My goal is to make every break disappear but we all know that is not always possible so I like to set the customers expectation a bit below what I "know" I can deliver and whenever possible we show the customer samples of actual completed repairs so they know what to expect.
I don't think there is a right or wrong way to sell your service as long as it works for you and your customers leave happy.

80% or better improvement on the visual aspect..........99.99% success rate on the actual repairs. Pretty simple to understand.

And I might add, a repair that is 100% complete can still have a visual improvement that is less than 100%. There are many factors that can leave scaring, even though the repair itself is filled 100%.
